WATERLOO REGION (February 24, 2015) – On Monday night the region’s top high school basketball team, St. Mary’s Eagles, captured their fourth straight District 8 Championship over St. Benedict CSS of Cambridge 78-55.

The Eagles maintained a slight lead for almost all 32 minutes as the St. Benedict’s Saints kept them close. That was until the fourth quarter when St. Mary’s blew the score open with electrifying dunks from grade 12+ Jamari Stephenson and strong defence that held the Saints to only 13 fourth quarter points.

Grade 12+ forward Tesloth Simon lead the way for the Eagles scoring 18 points while teammate Jermaine Lyle added 15.

One of the game’s top performer was grade 11 Saints’ guard Zubair Seyed scored a game high 20 points.

St. Mary’s now must play a CWOSSA AAAA qualification game against John F. Ross in Guelph on Wednesday at 4:00pm. If successful they will move onto the CWOSSA Championships hosted at Assumption College in Brantford February 27 – 28, 2015.

The St. Mary’s junior squad entered their D8 championship as the underdog against the St. David’s Celtics. This entertaining match up saw two teams slug it out with back and forth scoring, never allowing leads to stretch more than eight points until the fourth quarter.

St. Mary’s would eventually pull away early in the fourth, and fended off a late push from David’s to secure a 64-57 win. This championship makes it five in a row for the junior team.

Tyreak Farquharson lead the way for the Eagles scoring all of his 20 points in the second half.

The game’s top scorer came from St. David’s, as grade 10 point guard Brent Lasovich scored 32 of his team’s 57 points.

St. Mary’s will play their CWOSSA AAAA qualifier game this Wednesday in Guelph against Centennial CVI while the St. David’s junior team will advance to the CWOSSA AAA Championships in Guelph February 28 – March 2, 2015.

In the D8 Midget final, the St. Benedict’s squad outplayed the Resurrection Phoenix team to a 70-30 win for their fourth straight D8 midget title.
