WATERLOO, Ont. (October 31, 2013) – Top seeded Sir John A. MacDonald (Kitchener), Resurrection CSS (Waterloo) and Oakville Trafalgar HS (Oakville) all captured two victories each as the 2013 OFSAA Field Hockey Championship kicked off in Kitchener-Waterloo on Thursday.

Other teams picking up undefeated records during the first day of pool play included No. 5 Goderich DCI (Goderich) and No. 6 Pickering HS (Pickering).

No. 1 Sir John A. MacDonald rolled through its opening games earning an easy 5-0 win over Ajax HS (Ajax) and then dropped Saltfleet DHS (Stoney Creek) 6-1.   The Highlanders hold a 2-0 record and will face off against No. 8 Clarkson SS (Mississauga) tomorrow for top position in Pool A.  Clarkson lost their opening game to Saltfleet 5-3, but then rallied to win over Ajax 2-1.    Sir John A. MacDonald will advance to the quarterfinals regardless of the outcome tomorrow while both Clarkson and Saltfleet will be battling to advance.

In Pool B, the No. 2 Resurrection Phoenix got past Havergal College (Toronto) 2-0 and then dumped Bill Crothers (Unionville) 5-0 to open up their defence of their OFSAA title.  Kelle Snider of Kitchener, Ont., picked up the shutouts in both wins. Resurrection will face Nelson HS (Burlington) at 11am tomorrow morning at Warrior Field. Resurrection needs only a tie against Nelson to lock up first place in their pool tomorrow and regardless of result will advance to the quarter-finals. The Phoenix are looking to become the fourth team to capture four OFSAA field hockey titles and just the second team to do it consecutively.

Pool C saw No 3 Oakville Trafalgar claim a 3-0 win over Michael Power/St. Joseph CSS (Toronto) and then topple North Hastings 5-0.  No. 6 Pickering HS also went undefeated on the first day picking up a 5-0 win over North Hastings and then got past Michael Power/St. Joseph 4-2.  Oakville Trafalgar and Pickering will battle for top position in Pool C tomorrow at St. David Field beginning at 9:30am.  Regardless of the outcome – both teams will advance to the quarterfinal.

In Pool D, No. 5 seeded Goderich DCI (Goderich) scored a 2-0 victory over Kingston’s Regiopolis-Notre Dame CHS in their morning game before edging Malvern CI (Toronto) 2-1 in their afternoon match.  Goderich’s six points have earned them top position in Pool D and a position in the quarterfinals. Goderich had the most vocal fan base on Thursday with several students and staff making the hour and half trip to cheer on their school at the event.

No. 4 seed Merivale HS (Ottawa) picked up two ties on Thursday with the first coming in a 2-2 draw against Malvern CI (Toronto) and then a scoreless game against Regiopolis-Notre Dame CHS.  With a win tomorrow Malvern or Regiopolis could advance to the quarterfinals should Merivale register a loss or tie to Goderich on Friday morning.

Clarkson’s Emily Young netted four goals in her opening two games to leads the tournament in goals scored.  Seven others including three from top seeded Sir John A. MacDonald have three goals apiece.

Student-athletes persevered through rainy conditions all day with the area seeing consistent rain fall at all three venues.  The 2013 OFSAA Field Hockey Championship is being contested at St. David’s Field at St. David’s CSS, RIM Park and Warrior Field at the University of Waterloo.  Entry to all games are free.
