OFSAA FIELD HOCKEY: Semifinals set for Saturday; top seeds advance

FieldHockeyWATERLOO, Ont. (November 1, 2013) – Sir John A. MacDonald SS (Kitchener), Resurrection CSS (Kitchener), Oakville Trafalgar HS (Oakville) and Pickering HS (Pickering) all won their quarter-final matches as play concluded during the second day of the 2013 OFSAA Field Hockey Championship in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Three-time defending champion Resurrection, top seeded Sir John A. MacDonald and No. 3 Oakville-Trafalgar are the remaining schools who are undefeated after two days of play. Resurrection and Oakville Trafalgar will meet in a semifinal game at Warrior Field tomorrow while Sir John A. MacDonald will battle Pickering in the other semifinal hosted at St. David’s Field.  Both games get underway at 9:30am on Saturday.

In the quarter-final round Sir John A. MacDonald breezed past No. 7 Nelson HS (Burlington) 5-0.  Anna Larsson of Kitchener, Ont., netted a hat trick while teammate Nicole Woodcroft of Waterloo, Ont., notched the game winner just two minutes into the match.  Kelly Burns registered the shutout for the Highlanders.

Host Resurrection won their quarter-final match edging unranked Saltfleet DHS (Stoney Creek) 3-1.  Sister duo of Emily and Danielle Buttinger scored the first two goals respectively for the Phoenix while Hannah Askin added the third in the opening half to make the score 3-0.  Rachel Smith scored Saltfleet’s lone goal in the second half.

Oakville Trafalgar easily defeated No. 4 Merivale HS (Ottawa) 5-0 to advance.  Oakville’s Ellie Cookson continued her hot play netting two in the win while Brittany Grist scored the game winner.  Other scorers included Logan Hannay and Sadie Stephenson.  Cookson was one of the top scorers in pool play and now has a total of seven goals.

No. 6 Pickering knocked off No. 5 Goderich DCI (Goderich) 2-1 in a dramatic shootout victory.  Mikhaela Slavin of Pickering, Ont., notched the shootout winner on Pickering’s fifth shooter to clinch the game.

Leesa Oortman-Gerlings also scored in the shootout for Pickering and was the Trojan’s lone scorer in regulation.  She scored with just two minutes to play to make the score 1-1 pushing the game into overtime. Payten Lang was the lone scorer in regulation for Goderich.

Following semifinal games, action will move exclusively to St. David’s for the medal rounds with the bronze medal game going at 12:00pm while the gold medal game will be played starting at 1:30pm.
