SJAM-RCSSWATERLOO, Ont. (November 2, 2013) – Cross-town rivals the Resurrection Phoenix and Sir John A. MacDonald Highlanders will meet for the fourth straight time in the OFSAA field hockey championship after winning their semifinal matches this morning to advance.

No 1 seeded Sir John A. MacDonald SS (Waterloo) edged No. 6 Pickering HS (Pickering)  2-1 with Taytum Clairmont and Nicole Woodcroft scoring for the Highlanders in the win.  Pickering’s Kendra Price opened the game scoring in the first half before Clairmont evened the score just three minutes later.

Host Resurrection CSS (Kitchener) advanced with a strong 3-0 win over Oakville Trafalgar HS (Oakville) in their semifinal match to advance. Katherine MacMillian netted the first two goals of the game to lead the Phoenix.  Hannah Askin also scored in the win.

This marks the fourth consecutive time that Sir John A. MacDonald and Resurrection have met in the OFSAA championship with Resurrection walking away as the champions the last three seasons.   Scores of the previous games have been 1-0, 4-0 and 1-0 in favour of Resurrection.

Resurrection is aiming for its fourth consecutive OFSAA championship and is looking to tie St. John’s Kilmarnock (Breslau, Ont.), Notre Dame CHS (Burlington, Ont.) and South Huron DHS (Exeter, Ont.) as the only four-time champions in OFSAA field hockey history.  If they succeed this afternoon they will also be the second school in history to win four championships consecutively joining St. John’s Kilmarnock as the only other team to do so. St. John’s Kilmarnock accomplished this feat from 2006-2009 just prior to Resurrection’s reign.

For their part, Sir John A. MacDonald enter play as the top ranked seed having won last week’s CWOSSA championship with a 1-0 over the Phoenix.  This is also the second time the Highlanders have been ranked higher than the Phoenix coming into the event.

Before the gold medal game, Oakville Trafalgar and Pickering will face off in the bronze medal game beginning at 12:00pm on St. David’s CSS Field.  The gold medal game goes at 1:30pm immediately following the bronze game.

The 2013 OFSAA Field Hockey Championship is jointly hosted by District 8 Athletic Association and Resurrection Catholic Secondary School in Kitchener – Waterloo.

This is the sixth time since 1979 that the region has hosted this event with the last coming in 2009. The region also hosted in 2005 (Kitchener-Waterloo), 2004 (Breslau), 1999 (Breslau) and 1988 (Waterloo).  It also marks the first time in District 8 Athletic Association’s 23-year history that the district or a school within its association has hosted an OFSAA level event.
