WATERLOO, Ont. (November 2, 2013) – The Sir John A. MacDonald (Waterloo) Highlanders earned a decisive 1-0 win over the Resurrection (Kitchener) Phoenix winning their first-ever OFSAA field hockey championship at St. David’s Catholic Secondary School in Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday.
It was the fourth consecutive meeting between the two schools in the OFSAA final with Resurrection having won the last three previous OFSAA titles. The scores of the last three meetings were 1-0, 4-0 and 1-0.
Sir John A. MacDonald’s lone goal came at 12:34 in the first half when a Anna Larsson shot deflected into the net off a Resurrection player. Earning the shootout was the Highlanders goalie Kelly Burns.
“It’s amazing… we have been working super-hard every year for this and finally got it now,” said Larsson. “I think we just went that extra inch and worked harder every practice and every game to get it.”
“I cannot think of another 33 girls who deserve it more. They worked so hard for this. It really has been a process,” said Highlanders head coach Laurie Montgomery. “I’m ok with whatever the result is as long as they put it out there and that’s what they did today.”
The win marks an eighth consecutive year in which the OFSAA field hockey title has been won by a Waterloo region school. St. John’s Kilmarnock (Breslau) started the run back in 2006 winning four straight before Resurrection’s three-year reign started in 2010.
“We’ve gotten to know those teams over the years and its hard shaking those coaches hand when we’ve been fortunate enough to win three in a row,” said Resurrection head coach Yvonne Taylor. “It’s tough for us to lose, but in a way I’m happy to see [Sir John A. MacDonald] win.”
The Phoenix were looking to become only the fourth school in history to claim four titles and just the second to earn four consecutive titles.
“The girls were really pumped for a fourth repeat because those are landmarks that don’t come around very often,” said Taylor. “It is disappointing we couldn’t get that goal, but we were happy to get here after losing four starters from last year’s team.”
In the bronze medal game, No. 3 seeded Oakville Trafalgar HS (Oakville) secured a 2-1 win over No. 6 Pickering HS (Pickering) to claim third place. Ellie Cookson of Oakville, Ont. notched both goals for the Red Devils while Pickering’s lone scorer was Madeleine Krupl.
Cookson was one of the best players all tournament long scoring five goals in pool play and then added another four in playoffs to lead the tournament.
The 2013 OFSAA Field Hockey Championship is jointly hosted by District 8 Athletic Association and Resurrection Catholic Secondary School in Kitchener – Waterloo.
This was the sixth time since 1979 that region has hosted this event with the last coming in 2009. The region also hosted in 2005 (Kitchener-Waterloo), 2004 (Breslau), 1999 (Breslau) and 1988 (Waterloo). It also marked the first time in District 8 Athletic Association’s 23-year history that the district or a school within its association has hosted an OFSAA level event.
