WATERLOO REGION (November 9, 2018) – At Warrior Stadium in Waterloo on Thursday night, Resurrection was narrowly able to regain their championship with a 20-19 win over a talented St. David’s team.

The Celtics are the only team to challenge the Phoenix’s otherwise perfect record this year as they have won and tied against Resurrection in the regular season.

Resurrection entered the half with a 14-0 lead on a rushing touchdown from Jackson Lewis and a receiving touchdown from Jaxon Matcheski.

The Celtics were quick to answer after the half, marching down the field and scoring a touchdown from Tyresse Griffith.

Resurrection would answer midway through the fourth quarter on a rushing touchdown from Max LeDuc which went unconverted leaving the Celtics down 20-7.

Celtic’s quarterback Sam Hepditch wasted no time driving the ball down the field in a drive that ended with a touchdown pass to slotback Brayden Schneider. With a missed point after kick, Resurrection led 20-13.

Regaining possession, with minutes to play, Hepditch went back to work with large gains driving the ball deep into Phoenix territory. Hepditch hooked up with Griffith again to bring the game within one, and the two-point convert attempt failed leaving Resurrection to celebrate the District 8 title victory.

This is the second time Resurrection has lifted the D8 senior boys football plaque; the first time saw them march all the way to win a OFSAA Bowl title three years ago.

Resurrection will now play the winner of St. Mary’s from Owen Sound and St. James of Guelph on November 15th in the CWOSSA semi-final. The CWOSSA Championship will be played November 20th at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School in Cambridge.

The Phoenix junior team was able to capture their fourth straight championship on Thursday as they defeated St. Benedict’s 34-20.

Vivayk Patel scored three touchdowns for Resurrection, while teammate Tyler Putzu scored a pair. St. Benedict’s Jacob Kaminski has an outstanding game scoring three touchdowns as quarterback and making some significant tackles as linebacker.
