BOYS SOCCER: Samuel Valentine named most valuable player

WATERLOO REGION (June 20, 2019) – After St. Mary’s recaptured the District 8 boys soccer championship in May, swept through triple-A CWOSSA qualifying for the OFSAA Championships, it was no question that forward Samuel Valentine would be given the MVP honours for the league.

Valentine scored 14 goals in his D8 campaign scoring in all eight games. He would go on to score three goals in four CWOSSA matches as he helped the Eagles to a gold medal and an OFSAA bronze medal.

St. Mary’s is also represented on the all-star team by forward Ryan Amorim who scored six goals in the D8 season, as well as a pair of centre-backs, Luka Mandekic and Alban Osdautaj.

St. David’s season was just getting started when they collected their silver medal at the D8 Championship in extra shootout kicks. Led by all-stars Quinton Jackson and Sam Publicover, the Celtics went on to collect an additional silver medal at the double-A CWOSSA championships which was enough to get them a low seed at OFSAA where they would win the provincial gold medal.

Jackson scored 12 goals in his D8 season from the striker position, while Publicover was the steady leader and captain for the Celtics in the centre-midfield position.

In a very challenging league, the squad from Père-René-de-Galinée would finish with only a single win in the regular season, however, led by D8 all-star Christopher Hamilton, they were able to rebound in the single-A CWOSSA championships winning gold.

Resurrection finished third in the D8 regular season, and is represented on the all-star team by striker/midfielder Phil Milio who scored nine goals.

The lone goalkeeper selected as an all-star was G.P Iantorno from St. Benedict’s who recorded one shutout.

Monsignor Doyle’s Christian Ferraro makes it two years in a row as an all-star selection scoring nine goals in 2019.

Midfielder Martin Ukhanov from Woodland Christian rounds out the all-star selections.
