Woodland captures the 2013-14 District 8 Senior Boys Volleyball title at St. Mary’s HS on Nov. 11, 2013

KITCHENER, Ont. (November 11, 2013) – The Woodland Christian Cavaliers captured both junior and senior titles as the 2013-14 District 8 boys volleyball season closed on Monday night at St. Mary’s High School in Kitchener.

In front of a spirited Woodland fan base, the Cavaliers knocked off St. David’s 3-1 (25-20, 25-14, 21-25 and 25-16) in the junior championship, and then went on to capture the senior final over St. Mary’s also by the score of 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-20).

For the seniors it marked Woodland’s fourth District 8 title in five seasons reclaiming the title from St. Mary’s who won last year.  St. Mary’s would win the opening set 25-21, but Woodland rebounded and reeled off three straight set victories to close out the Eagles in four sets.

It was a heartbreaking ending for the Eagles who were the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs having earned two victories over Woodland already this year and rattled off a perfect 10-0 regular season campaign.  Woodland finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed posting a 7-3 record.

This was the fourth straight season Woodland and St. Mary’s have met in the District 8 senior final with Woodland holding the championship advantage three-to-one.

In the junior championship, Woodland would defend their District 8 title earning a 3-1 win over the St. David Celtics.  The win marks the fifth junior title since District 8 play began in 1990 and their fourth in seven seasons.

The Cavaliers jumped ahead 2-0 powered on set wins of 25-20, 25-14 – before the Celtics fought back to win the third set 21-25.  That was all St. David’s would muster as Woodland would go on to defeat them 25-16 in the fourth set.

All four teams advance to CWOSSA play with both Woodland teams representing District 8 at CWOSSA ‘A on Thursday in Walkerton, Ont.  St. David’s will play in a CWOSSA junior ‘AAA’ qualifier tomorrow while St. Mary’s has earned a berth into the CWOSSA senior ‘AAAA’ championship going Thursday in Guelph.
