CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP: Four seasons settled on Wednesday Afternoon

WATERLOO REGION (November 4, 2021) – In a rare occurrence, four District 8 team titles were distributed on Wednesday afternoon in what has been deemed Championship Week. 

In Field Hockey, undefeated Resurrection was taking on defending champion St. Mary’s. After each team scored once in the first half, Resurrection’s Sarah Schnarr potted her second goal of the game securing the 2-1 victory. 

St. Benedict’s played host to St. Mary’s in the senior girls basketball championship. The Saints were able to finish their undefeated season with a tight 39-35 win over the Eagles. Lily Vrugteman led the Saints with 11 points while Alison Staples added 8. St. Mary’s Sophia Urosevic was the game’s leading scorer with 26. 

The senior boys volleyball title was decided at Resurrection is a North division matchup between 4-1 Resurrection and 3-2 Père-René-de-Galinée. Les Chevaliers stormed out of the gate winning the first set 25-22, but Resurrection quickly squared things up with a 25-14 second set. It took extra points in sets three (28-26) and four (27-25) for Resurrection to secure the District 8 senior boys title, their first since the 2008-09 season. 

In the junior boys volleyball final, undefeated Père-René-de-Galinée was determined to win their first ever District 8 team sport title. In a matchup against fellow single-A rival Rockway, les Chevaliers won in straight sets, 25-19, 27-25, 27-25. 

On Thursday, two more championships will be settled as the St. Benedict’s junior girls basketball team will travel to Woodland to take on the Cavaliers at 3:30PM, and in junior boys soccer, undefeated St. Mary’s will play St. David’s at Schlegel Village Field at 3:15PM. 

The junior and senior football championships will take place on Friday. Resurrection will play host to St. Benedict’s in the senior final at 11:00AM, while St. Benedict’s will host St. Mary’s in the junior final at 2:00PM.
