WATERLOO REGION (March 4, 2015) – There were some great successes by District 8 high schools in this season’s CWOSSA Championships.

The senior girls volleyball team from Resurrection continued their dominance rolling to a quad-A CWOSSA Championship hosted in Waterloo.

They started the tournament with a straight sets win over Sir John A. MacDonald (SJAM) of Waterloo (25-19, 27-25), but lost the quarter final to Forest Heights (FHCI) of Kitchener (27-25, 25-27, 15-8). This meant they had to go the long way around the bracket and play SJAM again. The Phoenix again took down SJAM in straight sets 25-18, 25-19, setting up a rematch in the final against Forest Heights. Resurrection had a much easier match against FHCI in the final, taking the CWOSSA Championship in straight sets.

This is the first ever senior girls CWOSSA Championship on record for Resurrection.

The Resurrection Phoenix squad will now compete for a provincial OFSAA title March 9-11 in Windsor, Ontario.

Resurrection will not be the only D8 senior girls volleyball team represented at an OFSAA Championship this season, as Woodland Christian High School was perfect in their CWOSSA competition.

The Cavaliers started the single-A tournament with a straight sets win over Kincardine District (25-17, 25-19), and then another straight sets win over Valley Heights (25-19, 25-17). Woodland would then face Chelsey District which proved to be no match as they cruised to a 25-15, 25-15 semi-final result.

In the five set final against Kincardine, Woodland would not drop a set as they were crowned CWOSSA Champions (25-16, 25-20, 25-16).

Woodland will now compete at OFSAA single-A in Hamilton March 9-11, a tournament their boys team won this past Fall.

In the junior draws, St. Mary’s High School won the CWOSSA quad-A gold in a straight sets victory over Cameron Heights, while ES Père-René-de-Galinée won the single-A title over Valley Heights (25-11, 14-25, 15-12).

In boys basketball, the heavily favoured St. Mary’s Eagles had an early upset in their CWOSSA quad-A tournament falling to Cameron Heights in double overtime 95-90. They would eventually avenge that loss in the semi-final, thrashing Cameron 75-50.

St. Mary’s would eventually lose the CWOSSA final to Sir John A. MacDonald 74-58. Despite this loss, St. Mary’s will still advance to the OFSAA quad-A Championships in Windsor March 9-11.

ES Père-René-de-Galinée junior boys basketball team were led by Pat Martini as they won the CWOSSA single-A title. In their tournament final, Martini scored 29 points as PRDG defeated Georgian Bay 63-29.

District 8 is well represented at the OFSAA Wrestling Championships that are currently taking place in Windsor. Participating District 8 student athletes are:

There were six ladies from the Resurrection Phoenix alpine ski team who recently represented District 8 at the OFSAA Championships at Blue Mountain in Collingwood. These student athletes are:
