WATERLOO REGION (November 16, 2015) – On Thursday, the District 8 Fall sport season came to a close with the senior boys football, and girls basketball championships being decided.

Resurrection faced St. David’s in the first ever District 8 senior boys football championship. After a number of scoreless changes of possession in the first half, Resurrection broke the 0-0 tie on a 45-yard rushing touchdown from Devon Hinsperger later in the second quarter. After quickly regaining ball possession, the Phoenix would add to their lead, going up 14-0 before the end of the half.

The second half was more of the same as the Phoenix added two more rushing touchdowns. St. David’s would also score a touchdown in the second half, but would fall short of staging a comeback as they fell to Resurrection 29-7.

Later in the evening, the Resurrection junior basketball team looked to complete their District 8 campaign with no losses in their championship match up against St. David’s.

St. David’s was the first team to score in the game, but from then on the Phoenix scoring was persistent and their defense was impenetrable.

Delina Romano lead the scoring with 14 while her teammate Sydney Guker-Wickie scored 13 while Resurrection took the championship 38-14.

The senior Resurrection squad looked to make it a three-championship night for the Phoenix as they took on the St. Mary’s Eagles.

After trading baskets early, Resurrection would finish the first quarter with a 12 point lead and would continue to stretch that lead throughout the game.

Resurrection’s grade 11 point guard Krissia Vasquez led the Phoenix with 14 points and regularly captained the team’s transition offence. Vasquez’s teammate, grade 11 guard Meghan Sharp contributed 12 points to Resurrection’s 48-22 win.

The Resurrection junior and senior girls basketball teams will see CWOSSA action this Friday November 19th in Waterloo, while the senior boys football team will play their CWOSSA quarterfinal against Brantford Collegiate this week.
