SWIMMING: Resurrection sweeps the team awards for second straight year

WATERLOO REGION (January 15, 2016) – Resurrection Catholic Secondary School recaptured the overall combined, boys and girls swimming titles at the District 8 championship held Wednesday at Wilmot Recreation Centre.

Resurrection’s top performer on Wednesday was 17 year old Johanna Gross who won the senior girls title with three wins on the day including the 100M individual medley, 50M butterfly and 100M breaststroke. She also captured first with teammates in the 4 x 50M medley relay event. Caitlyn MacPhee, from Monsignor Doyle finished with the silver medal in the senior girls division, while St. Mary’s Allison Frezell finished with the bronze.

The boys senior division for Resurrection also had spectacular results as teammates Gabriel Baranoski and Marcel Heather tied for first in the division each winning three races. Baranoski won the 200M freestyle, 50M breaststroke and 100M breaststroke. Heather won the 50M freestyle, 100M individual medley and 100M backstroke. Brian Ricket of St. Mary’s finished with a bronze in the division.

St. Benedict’s who finished just a single point behind Resurrection in the boys team scores was led by Jason Gancena in the junior boys division who scored 30 points for the Saints winning three races. Gancena won the 50M freestyle, 100M freestyle and 50M backstroke. Nicholas Dosen of St. Mary’s finished with a junior boys silver medal while Dylan Robbescheuten finished with a bronze for Resurrection.

In the junior girls division Grace Solylo of St David’s captured gold winning all three of her individual events including the 50M freestyle, 50M butterfly and 100M freestyle. In all three races Solylo posted OFSAA qualifying times. Vicky Lehner finished with a junior girls silver medal for Resurrection, while St. Mary’s Nicole Stoyakovich from St. Mary’s won the bronze.

The girls open division resulted in a three way tie for first with St. Mary’s Emily Masters, and St. Benedict’s Shaunna Walker de-Jong and Charlotte Jones each tallying 28 points respectively. Masters won the 100M individual medley and 100M butterfly. Walker de-Jong won the 100M freestyle and the 50M freestyle while her teammate, Jones won the 200M individual medley and 100M backstroke. Each racer also finished with one second place finish, losing to each other in one race or another.

The boys open division was captured by Ethan Locis who won all three of his individual events including the 100M individual medley, 100M butterfly and 100M backstroke. Kyson Vi from St. Benedict’s finished with the boys open division silver medal, while Noah Betik from St. David’s won the bronze.
