Girls Volleyball: District 8 All-Star Squad

WATERLOO REGION (March 10, 2016) – Both Michaela Hellinga of Woodland Christian HS and Cassy Toschkoff of Resurrection CSS were named co-most valuable players for District 8 girls volleyball.

Grade 12 left side attacker Hellinga led Woodland to the best record in D8 this year, going 12-2 in the regular season. In the playoffs she drove her team all the way to the finals before they were defeated by St. Mary’s in an upset. Outside of D8 Hellinga was able to help her team go all the way and bring home a CWOSSA championship. Toschkoff empowered Resurrection to a dominant 11-3 record in the regular season with stellar play.

In addition to Hellinga, Woodland added grade 12 left side attacker Marika Frank to the all-star first team. District 8 champions St. Mary’s Eagles were well represented on this team with both grade 11 Lorena Tasedan and grade 12 Brittany Gulic being named first team all-stars. Rounding out the senior first team is two right side attackers, Sierra Dowling (St. David) and. Jenna Banz (St. Benedict).

Two grades 10 students were named to the second team all-stars, Maya Danis of St. Benedict’s and Melissa Laslavic of St. Mary’s. They were joined by grade 12 setters Megan Dalley (St. David) and Katarina Klassen (Rockway). Capping off the team was middle Natasha Marchildon of Pere-Rene and Tara Omand of Resurrection.

The District 8 champions St. Benedict’s had two representatives on the junior first team, left side attacker Hope Harnack and middle Olivia Benzin. Resurrection’s Abigail Boorsma and Callista Grant were both selected as to the first team. Emily White represented St. David’s and two grade 10 St. Mary’s Eagles were chosen, power Abby Reutz and setter Gabby Ratajczak.

The junior second team all-stars were comprised of three setters, Nicole Hellinga (Woodland), Chloe Bugdale (Resurrection) and Sidney Cook (St. Benedict). Grade 10 middle Sierra Schmidt of St. Mary’s was also named. Left side and right side attackers Nicole Petrescu and Dilara Sen from St. David’s and Pere Rene respectively rounded out the second team.
