WATERLOO REGION (November 11, 2016) – On Thursday in front of a packed house of Cavalier and Flames fans, Rockway and Woodland go to a fifth set in an eventual Rockway win.

Rockway controlled the play early in the first set despite some obvious nerves from both teams involving missed serves and unforced errors. Woodland would climb back into the set to knot it at 17, but after both teams traded side-outs, Rockway would sneak ahead at the right time taking the first set 27-25.

The second set started much like the first ended as neither team would claim more than a two point lead for the first 32 points of the set. Rockway would then go onto score six straight points off the serve of Ben Langweider which forced Woodland to take a timeout. The Cavaliers would answer with four straight points but the damage was done as Rockway would take the second set 25-20.

The Flames opened the third set with a 7-1 point run and could taste their first senior title in nine years, but Woodland was not interested in handing the title over so easily. Despite some massive attacks from Langweider, Woodland would battle back to tie the set at 16, eventually taking the set 25-23.

Woodland and Rockway would trade blows in the fourth set, but Woodland would not break, tying the sets with another 25-23 set win.

The fifth set proved to be controlled by Rockway as they started 4-1 and didn’t relent, eventually winning the championship with a 15-12 win.

Rockway will now advance to the A CWOSSA championship in Waterford Ontario on November 17th. Resurrection will be the AAA representative from District 8 in CWOSSA held on the same date in Waterloo.

The junior title was decided as a curtain raiser to the senior match between St. Mary’s and Rockway.

The Eagles lead by their three big swingers, Jacob Lohrenz, Eric Martin and Ben Lassaline proved to be too much for Rockway as they swept the title in three straight sets (26-24, 25-16, 25-17).

St. Mary’s will move onto CWOSSA next week, while Rockway will join their senior team in Waterford for the junior CWOSSA Championship. St. David’s won their CWOSSA qualifier earlier in the week and will compete in their CWOSSA championship in Walkerton on November 21st.
