WATERLOO REGION (November 15, 2016) – On Monday night on their home court, Resurrection’s senior team completed the rare perfect season against a tough St. Benedict’s squad.

Both teams executed strong defense throughout the game, but especially in the first quarter as the teams only scored a combined 12 points.

The second quarter is where the Phoenix flexed their muscle and proved why they were the top ranked team entering the final.

Grade 10 guard Sydney Guker Wickie along with grade 12 guard Meghan Sharp cranked up the offensive intensity in the second quarter while their teammate Krissia Vasquez played her typical, all-out scrappy defensive game.

The saints lead by grade 9 guard Alex Webb made a push in the second half to narrow the scoring gap but Resurrection proved to be too much to stop as the Phoenix would finish the District 8 season undefeated.

Guker Wickie and Sharp would finish the game with 11 points each while teammate Buse Bin Edwards would add 10.

Webb would lead the Saints in scoring with 10 while Elizabeth D’Souza would score 9.

Resurrection will move onto AAA CWOSSA later this week where they will face St. John’s (Brantford) in their opening match on Friday morning at Waterloo Collegiate Institute. St. David’s will advance to play in a AA CWOSSA Qualifier on November 15th in Brantford while Pere-Rene-de-Galinee will travel to Waterford for their A CWOSSA Championship.

The Woodland Cavaliers junior team were also looking to complete a perfect season on Monday night against St. Benedict’s.

Led by Alanna Parker, who scored a game high 13 points, Woodland would shut out the Saints in the second quarter and hold strong in the second half to capture the school’s first District 8 junior girls basketball title with a 33-23 win.

Woodland will play their A CWOSSA Championship in Waterford on November 18th, while St. Benedict’s will represent D8 in the AAA CWOSSA Championship in Waterloo on November 18 and 19. St. David’s will play a AA CWOSSA Qualifier on November 15th.
