D8 HOCKEY: Resurrection sweeps girls championship series

WATERLOO REGION (February 27, 2017) – On Thursday afternoon in Waterloo, Resurrection captured their second straight D8 girls hockey title in game two of a three game series over St. David’s.

Game two was stalemated throughout the first two periods with no scoring until Brooke Hepditch from Resurrection scored on a goal assisted by Maddie MacMillan early into the third period. Just 14 seconds later Megan Fergusson increased the lead to two.

Lex Schneider would put the game out of reach by scoring late in the third, giving Resurrection their second straight District 8 title.

Last year’s league MVP Morgan Heinbuch-Filipowitsch was a standout for the Phoenix as she recorded a shutout in both D8 final series games.

In game one Heinbuch-Filipowitsch received offensive support from Grace Davis who had a goal and an assist. Rachel Buttinger and Jennifer Bean also potted goals for the Phoenix who took game one 3-0.

Resurrection will advance to the AAA CWOSSA Championships on Monday March 6th in Brantford at 12:30PM when they take on the runner up from WCSSAA. They will then play at 3:30PM against Brantford Collegiate.

The season is not over for St. David’s as they have qualified for the A/AA CWOSSA Championships. They will be placed in a pool with Guelph’s Bishop MacDonnel and Simcoe Composite. Their first game will also be Monday at 12:30PM but in Owen Sound.
