WATERLOO REGION (March 27, 2017) – Saint’s power house outside attacker Jenna Banz was announced as the senior girls volleyball league’s most valuable player on Monday.
Banz proved to be a dominant player throughout the District 8 season with strong and consistent net play and serving. She would lead a young Saints squad to the D8 final where they would suffer a tough fifth set loss to St. David’s. St. Benedict’s would go on to qualify for the AAA CWOSSA championships where they would lose in the semi-final to the eventual champions.
Joining Banz as a first team all-star selection was her teammate and setter Maya Danis. Outside hitters Monica Zeglan and Hope Harnack were named as second team all-stars for the Saints.
District 8 Champions St. David’s Celtics are represented on the first team by grade 12 middle Rachel Sothern, grade 11 left side attacker Maya Sokolowski and grade 11 setter Marlie Dowling. St. David’s captured their first senior D8 title since the 1998-99 season with a balanced array of talent, and would go on to win silver at the AA CWOSSA Championships.
Grade 12 outside hitters Lorena Tasedan from St. Mary’s and Maddy Antwi from Resurrection rounded out the senior first team all-star selections.
Resurrection also had grade 12 setter Tara Omand, and grade 11 Jade Hickey honoured as second team selections, while grade 12 outside hitter Makenna Edissi and grade 12 setter Ava Harun were also recognized as second team all-star selections.
