WATERLOO REGION (March 28, 2017) – On Tuesday, District 8 announced St. David’s Celtic Hayden Berger as the most valuable player for boys hockey.
Berger, a grade 12 forward and team captain, scored ten goals in his D8 campaign on the way to winning the league championship in a three game series over Resurrection. Burger would lead the Celtics to the CWOSSA A/AA title game where they would lose a 4-1 decision to Erin District HS.
Joining Berger as first team selections for St. David’s are grade 12 defenceman Matt Shouppe and grade 11 forward Liam Hartman. Each scored three goals on the season with Hartman’s coming in the way of a hat trick on January 10th.
D8 silver medalists Resurrection are represented by grade 12’s Zach Ribeiro and Justin Schneider. Riberio was a consistent impact forward for the Phoenix scoring 12 goals on the season including two hat tricks, while Schneider was the reliable first line defender for the team all season.
Grade 12 forward Zach Bint from St. Mary’s rounded out the first team selections. Bint tallied a five goal season for the Eagles.
St. Benedict’s added the grade 11 defence pairing of Stewart Wilson and Nick MacDonald to the second team. Saints’ cross town rival Monsignor Doyle are represented by grade 10 forward Matt Hertner.
Both goaltenders from the D8 championship series were also nominated to the second team. Resurrection’s Zach Hatt tallied one shutout on the season and St. David’s Ethan Bulovas had two. Bulovas’ teammate, grade 11 forward Cam Hyjek, scored seven goals in the season completing the second team selections.
