WATERLOO REGION (December 5, 2019) – On Thursday, District 8 announced that St. David’s star running back and linebacker would be named the Father Mike most valuable player in senior football.
The Wilfred Laurier commit racked up seven touchdowns in the first five league games, leading the Celtics to their second District 8 Championship in the last four years.
Griffith helped his Celtics to a 21-8 CWOSSA semi-final win over St. Mary’s of Owen Sound before dropping the CWOSSA final to Assumption College School.
Last year’s Father Mike winner, Braydan Schneider from St. David’s was named as a first team all-star along with quarterback teammate Nathan Dewar who was pivotal in much of St. David’s offensive success in 2019.
Grade 12 slotback and safety Wyatt Ernst rounds out the Celtics first team all-star selections while teammates Nolan Beddoe and Zayd Cherri were named to the second team.
St. Benedict’s quarterback Ethan Eveleigh was the lone grade 11 selected as a first team all-star as he helped rally the Saints from an 0-4 start to the season to win the next three straight games, qualifying them for a shot at the District 8 Championship.
Eveleigh’s grade 12 teammates, running back Noah Medeiros and wide receiver Alex Stewart were also recognized with first team all-star honours, while Jacob Kaminski, Eric Laffin and Curtis Martin were second team all-star selections.
Resurrection’s running back London Dawson scored four touchdowns in 2019 as he also played defensive line, and teammate Jared Weiler scored three touchdowns as tight end and played defensive back. Nick Henning also played both ways scoring two touchdowns as a slot receiver, and joined Weiler in the Resurrection defensive secondary as a defensive back. All three were named as first team all-stars.
Phoenix senior team is represented by quarterback Tyler Putzu and linebackers Rowan Creighton and Brady Ioannidos on the D8 second team.
St. Mary’s grade 12 running back Matthew Weber had an outstanding year for the Eagles scoring seven turndowns earning him a first team nomination. Safety Jaydon Boxwell was also given first team honours for the Eagles.
Keyon Gratton, Zach Harvey, Nicholas DaSilva and Andrew Grygorachyk were all named as second team all-stars from St. Mary’s.
