St. Benedict’s captures District 8 combined swimming championship

BADEN, Ont. (December 11, 2013) – The St. Benedict’s Saints captured the overall combined swimming title at the District 8 championship held Wednesday night at Wilmot Recreation Centre in Baden, Ont.

The Saints finished as the top team earning their first title since the 2006-07 season title. They earned a combined 567 points points just a head Resurrection of who notched 505 total points while St. Mary’s was third at 431. Last year the Phoenix narrowly lost the combined title to the St. Mary’s Eagles.

In the boys competition, St. Benedict’s won posting 289 points while Resurrection was second with 248 points and St. Mary’s at 151. The girl’s competition saw St. Mary’s repeat as champions posting an impressive 280 points just ahead of St. Benedict’s who posted 278 points. Resurrection rounded out the top three with 257.

Individual results saw Allison Frezell and Brian Rickert of St. Mary’s take home the junior girls and boys overall titles respectively.

Frezell swam to 28 meet points just ahead of Resurrection’s Emilee Starr who registered 24 points in the girl’s competition. Resurrection’s Anna Karpets was third with 19 points. Rickets won the boys junior division with 30 points while Connor Goliath of St. Benedict CSS claimed second.

St. Mary’s Sara Canini won the individual senior girls competition earning 24 points while teammate Olivia Scagnetto  and Nicole Mitchell tied Resurrection’s Truc Tran-Dwyer for a three way tie of second place with 20 points each.

Monsignor Doyle’s Thomas Stroyan represented the Mustangs well striking gold in the individual senior boy’s competition collecting 29 points ahead of St. Mary’s Taylor White who finished with 21 points.

In the girls open category, Johanna Gross from Resurrection was the clear winner posting 40 points well ahead of Monsignor Doyle’s Angela Marina who tallied 25. Lukas Wormald (30pts) of St. David’s won the boys open category finishing ahead of Noah Thomas (26pts) and Kurtis Gray (20pts).

Top swimmers from tonight’s events will move on to CWOSSA which is slated for February 19th at Wilfrid Laurier University.
