WATERLOO, Ont. (December 16, 2011) – The Resurrection Phoenix continued their dominance in the pool sweeping all three titles up for the taking at the 2011-12 District-8 Swimming Championship on Thursday evening at Wilfrid Laurier University.
The Phoenix was the top team in the girls, boys and the combined team championship despite narrow finishes in all three divisions. The last time a Resurrection swim team have not held all three titles concurrently was back 2007-08 when won all but the boys title.
The girl’s squad have now secured nine straight championships while the boys have taken the last four. Overall the team has combined to win the last five.
In the girls division, Resurrection finished with 282 points while the St. Mary’s Eagles were second with 268 and the St. David Celtics placed third at 149 points. Resurrection also edged St. Mary’s in the boys division earning 252 points while Eagles were a close second with 237. The St. Benedict Saints placed third with 101 points.
In the combined standings, St. Mary’s missed top position by 30 points finishing with 505 points while Resurrection claimed first with 534 points. St. Benedict placed third with 232 and St. David’s was fourth with 220. Monsignor Doyle earned fifth place with 165 points.
A number of students had multiple first place performances and along the way qualified for Central Western Ontario Championship (CWOSSA) set for February in Guelph.
Among them were Resurrection’s Truc Tran-Dwyer and Shannon Eby. Both girls picked up four first place ribbons with Tran-Dwyer earning two individual (200 Meter Freestyle and 100 Meter IM Open) and two relays. Eby won three individual events (100 Meter IM, 50 Meter Freestyle and 100 Meter Backstroke) and also helped win the SR Girls 200m Free Relay along with Tran-Dwyer.
Other CWOSSA qualifiers in the girls individual events included: Holly Gojmerac, Paige Mohaupt, Sabrina Horner and Arianne Zamin (St. David), Frances Heather, Monica Marczuk, Blanaid McNally (Resurrection), Gillian Frezell, Jennifer Joseph, Olivia Scagnetto, Katie Gingrich, and Cristina Macedo (St. Mary�s), Dayna Milani (St. Benedict), Tara Lee (Monsignor Doyle).
Eby, Gojmerac, Frances qualified for CWOSSA in three individual events while Marczuk, Horner, Joseph, Frezell, and Mohaupt qualified in two.
Boy’s qualifiers included: Robbie Gray, Kurtis Gray, Mark Parent, Mathew Szymanowski, John Szpara, and Tyler Henry (Resurrection), Shane Meissner, and Thomas Stroyan (Monsignor Doyle), Adam Gerencser, Andrew Cardy, Dylan Chin-A-Loy, John Anderson, and Ben Flanagan (St. Mary�s), and Ben Taborek, and Blake Schuett (St. Benedict).
The Gray brothers both qualified for CWOSSA in three events while Parent, Szymanowski, and Cardy will compete in two individual events at CWOSSA.
CWOSSA is scheduled for February 13 at the University of Guelph. At that event, student-athletes will aim to qualify for OFSAA which will be held March 6-7 in Etobicoke, Ont.
