KITCHENER, Ont. (February 12, 2014) – The St. Mary’s Eagles and Resurrection Phoenix will clash once again for the District 8 senior girls volleyball title which is set for tonight (8:00pm) at St. Mary’s HS in Kitchener.

The two teams head into the competition as the top two teams in the league with St. Mary’s holding the edge having claimed a perfect 10-0 season along with a 3-0 win over semifinal opponent Père-René-de-Galinée last night.  St. Mary’s have largely been unchallenged all season long, losing just three sets with two of those set losses coming at the hands of the  Phoenix back on December 18.  Overall, the Eagles have swept opponents in nine of their 11 games this year.

Resurrection for their part hold an 8-2 record with their only losses coming against the Eagles.  They also earned a 3-0 sweep on their semifinal opponent (St. David’s) on Monday. They have lost just 14 sets on route to the final and are looking to regain the D8 championship after losing out last year to the Eagles.

The schools have traded D8 championship titles over the last two seasons with Resurrection taking it two years ago, while St. Mary’s heads into tonight’s game as the defending champion.

The Eagles may have the edge given their perfect record and taking into account that their last D8 loss came almost two years ago giving them a perfect 25-0 record against District 8 opponents over two seasons.

In the junior championship (6:00pm) No. 2 seeded St. David’s will look to knock off defending champion Resurrection.

Both teams are evenly matched with Resurrection earning the No. 1 playoff seed on a tiebreaker (sets won and lost head-to-head).  They both hold a 9-1 record with the Celtics claiming the first meeting (Dec. 9) 3-2 while Resurrection earned a 3-1 victory back on January 8.

Resurrection disposed of St.Mary’s 3-0 in their semifinal meeting on Monday while St. David held on for a dramatic 3-2 victory over Woodland CHS to qualify for tonight’s final.

The District 8 championship kicks off at 6:00pm with the junior championship while the senior game will go at 8:00pm.  Both games will be held at St. Mary’s HS in Kitchener, Ont.
