VOLLEYBALL: Greulich named MVP as District 8 announces girls volleyball all-stars

WATERLOO REGION (April 3, 2014) – Sydney Greulich of St. Mary’s HS capped off her high school volleyball career in style, claiming MVP honours as District 8 Athletic Association named their annual all-star squad on Thursday. Greulich was the league’s best player in her final season guiding the Eagles to their second District 8 title in as many years. Over her two years as a senior player, she helped St. Mary’s attain a perfect 26-0 record in District 8 play including the two D8 championship crowns. Greulich was joined by two other Eagles on the all-star team including Celeste Witzell and Brandy Murovec. Witzell earned first team honours and Murovec was named to the second team.

Second place Resurrection also placed three athletes on the all-star squad with Kelsey Caza and Chloe Knispel representing the Phoenix on the first team while Emily Fischer was named to the second team. The Phoenix finished runner-up to the Eagles falling 3-1 to St. Mary’s in the D8 championship. Kristine Boileau of Pere Rene de Galinee had a spectacular first year competing at the senior level earning first team-all star honours. After suffering a broken leg against St. Benedict’s back in December, the grade 11 middle returned to lead Les Chevaliers to a berth in the single “A” OFSAA championship. Sara Purdy was lone representative from St. David’s earning a first team selection. Second team honours also went to Rachel Guetter (Woodland CHS), Maddie Kerr (St. Benedict), Hannah Klassen (Rockway) and Jessna Marmo (Monsignor Doyle CSS). On the junior side, District 8 champion St. David’s had three members earn all-star status including Meghan Dalley, Sierra Dowling on the first team while Brittney Schmidt was honoured on the second team. Woodland’s Marika Frank and Michaela Hellinga along with Resurrection’s Maddie Antwi and Cassy Toschcoff rounded out the first team junior all-stars. Other second team nods went to Jenna Banz (St. Benedict) Sharon Eck (Pere Rene), MaKenna Edissi (St. Mary’s), Isabella Ramos (Resurrection) and Lorena Tassadari (St. Mary’s). Rogers TV – Kitchener’s (Local Cable 20) new weekly high school sports show “The Home Team” will feature the District 8 all-star’s on its show this week with repeat airings set for Friday at 1:00am, 9:30am and 4:30pm. The show will repeat again on Saturday April 5th at 12:00am and 7:30am.
