St. Mary’s soars to victory at D8 girls soccer championship

WATERLOO, Ont (May 23, 2014) – The St. Mary’s Eagles claimed their fifth District 8 girls soccer title in six seasons upending rival Resurrection Phoenix 6-0 on Friday at St. David Catholic Secondary School.

The Eagles were led by Elisha Amorim and Christie Downey who each scored twice in the game. Jessica rocha and Cheyenne Sexton added the other goals while Madison McDonald recorded the shutout for St. Mary’s in the win.

The title for St. Mary’s was also their fifth in the 24 year history of District 8. Resurrection was last year’s champion and beat St. Mary’s in the championship game.

St. Mary’s now advances to play in a CWOSSA qualifier set for Monday against District 5’s Assumption Catholic School. That game will be played in Brantford at a yet to be determined game time.
