BB-SR/JR-G: Saints and Phoenix battle in D8 final

CAMBRIDGE, Ont. (November 5, 2014) – The St. Benedict’s Saints and the Resurrection Phoenix will meet in both ends of the District 8 girls basketball championship set for Friday evening at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School.

In the senior division No. 1 seeded St. Benedict’s got past the No. 4 St. Mary’s Eagles 34-24 in their semifinal game this afternoon. St. Benedict’s Kayla Leusink drained 10 points while teammate Laura Ivits notched seven in the win. Brittany Gulic had a game high 17 points for the Eagles in the loss. Resurrection won their semifinal in a 34-32 nail biter over the St. David Celtics. Celia McGlynn led the Phoenix scorers with 13 points while Bobbie-Sue Hentges had 11 for the Celtics.

St. Benedict’s is searching for their first senior girls title since 2002 while the Phoenix are aiming for their third consecutive title. The Saints were the best team in D8 league play posting a 11-1 record and boasting the best offence in the league scoring 473 points.

The Phoenix for their part finished second going 9-3 and dealt St. Benedict’s their only loss of the season with a 48-45 win back on October 20.

St. Benedict’s will also meet Resurrection in the junior championship with the Phoenix looking for their fourth consecutive D8 junior title. The Saints last won a D8 title in 2010. Resurrection is the team to beat recording a perfect 10-0 record and having dumped the St. David Celtics 50-7 to reach the D8 final. St. Benedict’s was the No. 3 seed entering playoffs with a 5-5 record and they upset the No. 2 seeded St. Mary’s Eagles (8-2) 41-36 to qualify for the championship.

The junior championship kicks off Friday’s District 8 girls basketball championship at 6:00pm while the senior final follows at 8:00pm. Both games will be played at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School in Cambridge. Admission is $2.
