BB-JR/SR-G: Leusink shines for Saints in D8 championship

CAMBRIDGE, Ont.(November 7, 2014) – Cambridge’s Kayla Leusink poured in 20 points as the St. Benedict Saints topped the Resurrection Phoenix 46-30 to win the District 8 senior girls basketball championship.

Leusink was the games top scorer while teammate Afifa Salaad contributed 13 points in the championship win for the Saints. Rachel Engle led Resurrection’s scoring thrust with 14 points with teammate Brittany Haughton posting 13.

The championship is just St. Benedict’s second in D8 play and their first since 2002-03.

In the junior championship, Resurrection would win a lopsided battle dusting St. Benedict’s 54-13. It marks the fourth consecutive junior girls title for the Phoenix and ninth overall since District 8 formed back in 1990.

Krissa Vasquez was the hot scorer for Resurrection posting 22 points while Jama Bin-Edward had 16. Maya Danis contributed 8 points in the loss for the Saints.

Both championship squads advance to play in a Central Western Ontario (CWOSSA) qualifier game set for Wednesday, November 12th against Brantford CI. Resurrection will host the junior game while St. Benedict’s will host the senior game. Game times are to be determined.
