WATERLOO REGION (April 7, 2027) – On Thursday, District 8 announced the boys hockey first and second team all-star selections, and Justin McMaus received top honours being named the league’s most valuable player.
McManus, a grade 12 forward, cranked up the pressure in the playoffs, helping the Phoenix move from the last seed entering the playoffs, to a team hoisting the championship plaque. In a 3-2 quarter-final, win over St. David’s it was McManus who potted the game winning goal, followed by a hat-trick in Resurrection’s semi-final win over top seeded St. Benedict’s, and topped the season off with a pair of goals, including a last minute game-winner in the championship.
Joining McManus as second team all-stars are grade 12 teammates, Garrett Conway on defence and Liam Hatt between the pipes.
Monsignor Doyle took home the silver medal in the 2021-22 season led by first team all-stars, forward Cole Owen and goalie Daniel Rose. Owen led the Mustangs in scoring with six goals in the final four games of the season, including a hat-trick on February 22. Teammate Owen Labreque was named to the second team, scoring three goals, including an OT winner in the season opener.
Grade 11 forward Ethan Yantha from St. Benedict’s led the Saints to an undefeated regular season record, and was credited with a first team all-star selection for his efforts. Fellow grade 11 forward Carson MacDonald was named to the second team with six goals in seven games.
A pair of grade 11 forwards from St. Mary’s were named as District 8 all-stars. Skyler Roeder was named to the first team, while the second team honours went to Ryley Roeder.
Carson Cocchiola, a grade 12 defenceman from St. David’s round out first team all-star selections, and fellow Celtic Ben Pendleton was named as a second team all-star.
