D8 Boys Basketball: Eagles soar past Celtics in senior championship

WATERLOO REGION (February 17, 2023) – On Thursday night the St. Mary’s senior basketball team fired out of the gates in front of a capacity crowd in their home gym to win the District 8 title. 

In the first quarter, Eagles’ Marcus Johnson and Isaac Blake heated up quickly, combining for 16 of their team’s 18 first quarter points. By half, St. Mary’s had extended the lead to 20. 

Celtic’s Nikola Simonovic came out after half looking to close the gap, scoring nine points in the third quarter, but the Eagles were too strong on the night, closing out the game 76-47. 

Johnson finished with a game high 24-points while Blake totaled 17. Simonovic finished with 13-points for St. David’s. 

St. Mary’s will advance to the triple-A CWOSSA championships being held in Kitchener-Waterloo on February 24th and 25th. St David’s will represent District 8 at the double-A CWOSSA Championships being hosted in Shelburne, while Woodland is advancing to the single-A CWOSSA Championship in Walkerton. 

In the District 8 junior championship, top seeded St. Mary’s High School was upset by Monsignor Doyle 71-65. 

George Nasir led the Mustangs with 23 points, while DeShawn Hibbert led the Eagles with 20.

The Resurrection novice basketball team repeated as champions beating St. Mary’s in a game that came down to the wire, 51-48.  Noah Haspool led scoring with 24-points for the Phoenix while Haben Gebrestiei led the Eagles with 15.
