D8 CHAMPIONSHIPS: Many teams crowned champions prior to March Break

WATERLOO REGION (March 22, 2022) – The week prior to March Break saw eleven team champions determined over a three day span in what played out as the District 8 Winter week of champions. 

St Benedict’s started the action on Tuesday at the swim championships where they captured the girls team championship and the overall team championship while Père-René-de-Galinée won the boys team title. 

One of the biggest stories during the championship week was the Monsignor Doyle senior boys basketball team who captured their first title since the 1992-1993 season. The Mustangs toppled St. Mary’s 49-44. 

In the junior basketball final, St. Benedict’s upset previously undefeated St. Mary’s 65-37. Saints’ Hayden Johns scored a game high 24 points while teammate Jordan Taylor added 12. 

The Resurrection senior girls volleyball team completed their undefeated District 8 campaign with a straight sets win over Monsignor Doyle, (25-21, 25-16, 25-18). This is Resurrection’s first senior girls volleyball championship since the 2014-15 season. 

In the junior volleyball playoffs there were a number of upsets that saw the sixth seed St. Benedict’s squad complete their Cinderella run over the fourth seed St. Mary’s Eagles in four sets, (15-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23). 

On the ice, the St. David’s girls team swept the league and the championship with a convincing 5-0 win over Resurrection. Lilly Bell scored a hattrick while Meghan Steward recorded a shutout. 

The Resurrection boys hockey team finished the regular season in last place, and finished the post season with a gold medal. With about one minute left in the gold final, Justin McManus scored his second goal of the game to take a 5-4 lead over Monsignor Doyle which remained the final score. 

The District 8 alpine ski championships were held on Thursday at Mansfield Ski Club. Rockway’s Morgan Schmidt and Simon Kureck each won a gold medal in the high school trained division, while Resurrection’s James Filiatrault won the boys open division.

3rd – Hanna Thorne (SBCSS)

Alpine High School Trained Boys Division:
1st – Simon Kureck (RMC)
2nd – Raul Domingo Saldana (SBCSS)
3rd – Vincent Sugg (SDCSS)

Alpine Open Boys Division:
1st – James Filiatrault (RCSS)
2nd – Jacob Riddell (RCSS)

In the novice championships, St. Mary’s girls volleyball topped Resurrection in two close straight sets, (25-23, 25-23), while the Phoenix boys basketball team beat the Eagles 67-18 to win gold.
