D8 GIRLS SOCCER: League names Stavropooulous the most valuable player

WATERLOO REGION (June 21, 2022) – St. Mary’s midfielder Olivia Stavropooulous led the Eagles to an undefeated District 8 girls soccer season, and for her efforts was named the league’s most valuable player. 

Stavropooulous scored nine goals in D8 play including a hattrick against Monsignor Doyle in their semi-final win. She helped the Eagles recapture the District 8 Championship title after the league was on hiatus for two seasons due to COVID-19. 

Teammate Gillian Rovers was also named a District 8 all-star. Rovers, a grade 12 striker, helped the Eagles to an undefeated triple-A CWOSSA tournament where she scored four goals in four games, including two in the semi-final and one in the championship final. 

Eagles’ grade 10 goalie Mya Brodrecht was name to the squad recording four shutouts in eight District 8 games, while grade 12 teammate Savanah Bauer secured the defensive back line for the Eagles all season.

Resurrection collected the District 8 silver medal and is represented by all-star selections Ashley Blazek at midfield and Ellis Ricket-Hall who split time between the forward and midfield positions. 

Joining the all-star team from Père-René-de-Galinée is grade 12 striker Natalie Mouradian. Mouradian led her squad to a berth at single-A CWOSSA where she scored four goals in two preliminary games and helped the team win gold and punched their ticket to OFSAA.

Grade 12 striker Sophie Zettel helped the St. David’s Celtics to a second place regular season finish and was named to the all-star team for her efforts. 

A pair of grade 10 midfielders represented from Cambridge high schools; Katrina Cooper from St. Benedict’s and Molly Owen from Monsignor Doyle were named as all-stars in their first time playing high school soccer. 

Avaleigh Groot, a grade 11 defender from Woodland rounds out the 2022-2023 District 8 girls all-star team selections.
