WATERLOO REGION (February 28, 2023) – The top seeded girls hockey team from St. David’s, and the underdog boys team from Monsignor Doyle were not interested in allowing their best of three hockey series reach a third game. On Monday, both teams ended their District 8 campaigns with gold medals around their necks.

The Celtics girls team entered game two having won the first game of the series 5-1 over cross town rival Resurrection. In that game, Casey Beisel and Megan Bell each scored twice and Carlene Johnson scored once for St. David’s, while Resurrection’s Charlee Harding scored for the Phoenix.

Game two was much of the same offensive onslaught from the Celtics scoring five unanswered goals. Megan Bell scored another two goals, while Addison Tillich, Kamryn Szumlinski and Halle Murray each added one as they won game two 5-0. This marks the fifth straight girls hockey title for the Celtics.

St. David’s will advance to the A/AA CWOSSA Championship hosted in Simcoe and Port Dover, Ontario, March 6 and 7, while Resurrection will advance to the AAA CWOSSA Championship in Kitchener.

The boys team from Monsignor Doyle entered their championship series as the underdogs to the top seeded St. Mary’s Eagles, but after winning a tightly contested game one on the road, they were primed to win the first boys hockey title in school history.

In game one, the Mustangs edged past the Eagles 3-2 with goals from Aiden Goias, Cameron Hattie and Aiden Singh while Eagles goals came from Christian Cerovac and Evan Palubeski.

In game two at Galt Arena, Monsignor Doyle established an early lead midway through the first period with a goal from Aiden Singh. After a St. Mary’s penalty in the second period, Monsignor Doyle’s Travis Nederpelt scored on the power play to push the lead to two goals.

Midway through the third frame St. Mary’s Maddox Turner scored to return the deficit to just one goal, but late in the game, Hunter Barnhardt scored for the Mustangs securing the 3-1 win and the District 8 title.

Monsignor Doyle will now advance to the AAA CWOSSA Championship in Fergus March 6 and 7, while St. David’s will represent District 8 at the A/AA Championship in Delhi and Waterford Ontario.
