WATERLOO REGION (April 6, 2022) – On Wednesday, District 8 announced that Alex Slavcev would be honoured with the league’s top individual award. 

Slavcev, a grade 12 power hitter, helped lead the Phoenix to an undefeated District 8 season and championship. Along with teammates, first team all-star Julia Prince and second team all-star Sierra Phillip, Resurrection cruised through the regular season only dropping one set until St. Mary’s took them to a fifth set in the District 8 semi-finals. They would complete the perfect season in a straight sets win in the final over Monsignor Doyle. 

The Mustangs are represented on the first team by a pair of grade twelves, middle Jenny Clarke and power Makaila Squires. Both had a successful year helping their squad make a return to the District 8 finals. 

St. David’s Maia Dan was named as a first team all-star selection and is joined as an all-star by second team teammate Julia Blair. Dan has committed to the University of Guelph women’s volleyball program for the Fall of 2022.

Grade 12 power Ashlynn Freiburger and grade 12 libero Nicole Vandici from St. Mary’s round out the senior first-team all-star selections. Freiburger will be heading to the University of Waterloo next year to play libero for the Warriors.

Na’yah Bhatia, a grade 10 power attack from Père-René-de-Galinée was named as a second team selection as she helped lead her squad to another season with a winning record. 

A pair of sisters, Laura and Stefanie Ciz, from St. Benedict’s were both named as second team all-stars along with Rockway’s grade 12 power Fayth Bender.
