Eagles fly high at District 8 championship

WATERLOO, Ont. (October 18, 2013) – St. Mary’s Eagles rushed their way to the 2013-14 District 8 Cross Country Championship claiming the overall girls, boys and combined titles on Friday at Bechtel Park in Waterloo, Ont.

Gold medalist senior aged runners were St. Benedict’s Marcus Nobile who claimed the 7,000-metre boys’ race while Sylvie Carruthers of Père René de Galinée would secure the 5,000-metre girls race.

St. Mary’s would win the overall combined title with 46 points edging out St. Benedict finished second with 39 points while Resurrection placed third with 34. St. Mary’s and St. Benedict also finished 1–2 in the overall boys and girls categories.

Carruthers, a grade 11 student at Père René, won the senior girls event with a time of 18 minutes and 55.3 seconds a full 34 seconds ahead of St. Mary’s Olivia Scagnetto who won a silver medal with a time of 19:24.8. Third place went to Grace Gany as she crossed at 19:32.59.

For Nobile, he edged out Resurrection’s Brendan Masters for the senior boys title with a time of 25:15. Masters finished just a few seconds behind at 25:22 and was the only grade 11 student to place in the top-10. St. Mary’s Sebastian Jania rounded out the top three with a time of 26:33.4.

Despite not medaling in the senior girls’ race, Monsignor Doyle walked away as the top senior girls’ team earning 34 points while St. Mary’s finished second with 43. St. Mary’s would win the boys title with 20 points.

The Eagles would also collect both the junior boys and girls titles powered by the results of Minas Abara and Sydney Collins. Abara won the junior boys 6,000-metre race with a time of 22:15.7 while Collins took the junior girls 4,000-metre race in 17:09.2. Collins was one of three Eagles to earn a podium position in the junior girls event as she was followed by teammates Christie Downey and Carina De Sousa.

St. Benedict’s Sevanne Ghazarian blistered the midget girls’ 3,000-metre course racing to a time of 10:43.9 which was a one minute and 43.2 seconds ahead teammate Emily Soares. Soares placed second with a time of 12:27.1 while Kennedy Bourque of St. David’s took bronze. In the midget boys race Benton Hayes opened up his career for the Resurrection Phoenix with a gold medal finish dashing to a time of 18:09.09. He was ahead of Gianluka Atdandachi of St. Mary’s who took silver while Jacob Lewis of St. Benedict was third.

St. Benedict’s would claim both midget titles earning 35 points in the boys and a near perfect 14 points in midget girls. The Saints placed six runners in the top eight of the midget girls’ race and two in the top three.

Next week, runners from this event will move on to CWOSSA Cross Country championships in hopes of advancing to the OFSAA championship. CWOSSA will take place October 24th at the University of Guelph Arboretum while OFSAA will be held November 2nd in Espanola, Ont.
