WATERLOO (October 9, 2013) – The St. David Celtics golf team earned top honours yesterday winning all four major categories up for grabs at the District 8 golf championship hosted at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo.

The Celtics would earn the boys and girls team titles while St. David’s Matt LeMay and Alex Garcia won the overall boys and girls individual titles respectively.

In the boys competition LeMay shot a one-over par 73 to take the individual title while leading the Celtics to a first place overall team finish.  Lemay was District 8’s top golfer all season, winning all three events including the District 8 Open (Sept 18) and the District 8 Classic (Sept. 25).

LeMay also was the top individual golfer at CWOSSA championship and along with teammate Connor Doucette will represent District 8 at OFSAA next Wednesday and Thursday (October 16-17) at the Essex Golf & Country Club.  LeMay is looking to improve on his 16th place finish last year at OFSAA.

Resurrection’s Paul Edgar and Monsignor Doyle’s Hayden Edworthy both carded a two-over 74 rounds for second place at the District 8 championship while Connor Doucette and Jonathan Kerr tied for fourth with a 76.

In the overall competition, Doucette earned silver behind LeMay while Edworthy took home the bronze.  The overall competition was based on the three combined District 8 events with the final event counting for double points.

Resurrection finished second in the team competition while Monsignor Doyle was third.

In the girl’s competition, Garcia was the top golfer posting a winning score of 95 to take home the individual title.  Garcia, like Lemay had also won the previous two D8 events.  St. Benedict’s Allison Andrade placed second behind Garcia while Andrea Siegel of St. David’s was third.

St. David’s notched the team championship ahead of St. Benedict’s while Resurrection finished third and St. Mary’s placed fourth.  It marked the first time since the 1999-2000 season that the Celtics have earned a girls golf championship.

St. Benedict’s Elanna Lachaine-DeMarchi will be the lone District 8 representative at the Girls OFSAA championship festival taking place next Thursday (Oct. 17) at Shanty Bay Golf Club just outside of Barrie, Ont.  Lachaine-DeMarchi placed sixth at the CWOSSA Girls championship last week which qualified her for the OFSAA event.

This was the first time District 8 had hosted its annual golf league in the fall moving it from the spring. Operating since 1990, the league was moved to align with the CWOSSA and OFSAA golf championships in order to have the top golfers advance to those championships.

Both the boys and girls play in two competitions plus a District 8 championship event.  The first two events of District 8 league play act as CWOSSA qualifier while the District 8 Championship is held between CWOSSA and OFSSA in order to recognize a league champion in individual and team play.
