Mustangs reclaim overall title at District 8 badminton championship

badmintonKITCHENER, Ont. (April 10, 2014) – The Monsignor Doyle Mustangs are once again the top badminton school in District 8 after claiming the overall championship on Thursday at Conestoga College.

Monsignor Doyle are a powerhouse badminton program, having won the last 23 of 24 overall District 8 titles with their lone loss coming at the hands of Woodland CHS last season. This year the Mustangs won with a combined total of 120 points while Resurrection finished second in the with 109 points. Last year’s champion Woodland scored 107 points for third.

Leading the way for the Mustang’s 23rd title was Sherry Wong who took silver in the senior girls singles event while Sebastian Grasso and Becca Bouchey grabbed silver in the senior mixed doubles discipline. Makayla Gaspar and Victoria Barroso struck gold for Monsignor Doyle in the junior girls double event and Erin VanKooy won bronze in the junior girls singles rounding out the Mustang medal haul.

Senior singles titles went to Shakeel Rao of St. Mary’s High School on the boys side while Zoe Zhou of St. Benedict’s claimed the girls title.

Resurrection CSS and Woodland CHS battled for gold medals in both the senior girls and boys doubles finals. Resurrection’s Jamie Tran and Cole Wendland took top position in the boys final while Woodland’s Rachel Guetter and Emily Pidduck collected the girls title.

Woodland also earned a top result in the senior mixed doubles with Drew Carrick and Emma Roorda taking gold for the Cavaliers.

Woodland was able to repeat as champions in the senior team championship edging out Resurrection by a mere two points. The Cavaliers finished with 63 points while Resurrection had 61. Monsignor Doyle was third with 59.

In the junior competition which was held on Wednesday at Conestoga College, Rockway was the story of the day winning their first ever District 8 team title in badminton. The Flames won the junior title with 75 points while St. Mary’s finished second with 64.

Rockway got golden performances by Kristine Wu in junior girls singles along with Nathan Hebel and Aidan Cameron in boys doubles. Also striking gold were Zack Kehl and Laura Moolenbeek in the junior mixed doubles competition. Kat Klassen and Jamie Torrance-Perks earned bronzed in the junior girls doubles.

Nick Amorim of St. Mary’s defeated teammate Conor Dowling to win the junior singles title while Monsignor Doyle’s . Makayla Gaspar and Victoria Barroso won gold in the junior girls doubles event.

Champions and finalists from each category have qualified for the Central Western Ontario Championship (CWOSSA) which is set for April 16 & 17 at Conestoga College. The juniors will play on Wednesday, April 16th while the seniors will compete on Thursday, April 17th.

All eight District-8 schools were represented at the two day event including Monsignor Doyle CSS, ES Pere-Rene-de-Galinee, Resurrection CSS, Rockway MC, St. Benedict CSS, St. David CSS, St. Mary’s HS and Woodland CHS. Also competing in the event was the Discipleship Christian SS which is a new school located in Breslau, Ont.
