KITCHENER, Ont. (April 12, 2012) � The Resurrection Phoenix captured their first ever District 8 senior badminton championship dethroning the long time Monsignor Doyle Mustangs for top position on Thursday at Conestoga College.
Resurrection�s title marks the first time in the championship�s 22-year history that another team other than Monsignor Doyle has claimed an event. The Mustangs have owned the District 8 championship earning all of the senior, junior and overall titles since 1990-91. The junior and overall titles will be awarded tomorrow.
Resurrection narrowly defeated Monsignor Doyle earning the senior title by just three points. The Phoenix claimed the senior championship with 67 points while the Mustangs finished with 64. The St. Mary�s Eagles were the third place team capturing 51 points.
Resurrection�s Tong Silimai led the Phoenix to the title earning the senior girls single title. She topped Emily Boyd of Monsignor Doyle to earn the singles title. Boyd then played teammate Victoria Sousa for second place with Sousa defeating Boyd for runner up honours. Sousa had earlier lost to Silimai setting up the Boyd/Sousa runner up match.
In the senior boy�s event, Derek Lenos of Woodland Christian HS successfully defended his 2010-11 title by taking earning the boys single championship.
Mixed doubles play saw Woodland capture top honours with the combo of Trevor DeWeerd and Katherine Mazereeuw defeat Grace Thomas and Josh Soares from Monsignor Doyle.
The girls� double title was awarded to Resurrection�s Nichole Burns and Arianna Dufresne while the boys� doubles titles went to Rockway�s Jon Wong and Micah Brubacher-Zehr.
The District 8 badminton championship will continue tomorrow with the juniors taking the court beginning at 9:00am on campus at Conestoga College. Play will wrap at approximately 2:45pm with the junior and overall champions being awarded.
