The Saints regain the District 8 Cross Country Title


WATERLOO REGION (October 26, 2015) – Last week at Bechtel Park in Waterloo, the St. Benedict Saints Cross Country team regained their overall champion status after a seven year drought.

Lead by their superstar OFSAA contender Sevanne Ghazarian, The Saints also won the senior girls and overall girls divisions. Ghazarian captured gold in the senior girls race with an impressive three minute and 18 second gap on her teammate, and silver medalist, Emily Soares. St. Mary’s Carina DeSousa captured the bronze.

In the senior boys division, Monsignor Doyle’s Joseph De Sousa would cruise across the finish line with a comfortable lead  to take gold. Following De Sousa, would be St. Benedict’s Greg Danayan who took silver, and Isaac Veldhuis would finish third representing Woodland Christian. Danayan’s teammates, Devaughn Channer, Kyle Szabo and Kyson Vi would cross the line, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively to allow St. Benedict’s to capture the senior boys team championship.

The junior and midget boys divisions were completely dominated by the Eagles of St. Mary’s. Marcus Kemp, Miguel Robles and Justin Higgins made it a clean sweep for St. Mary’s on the junior boys podium as they finished first, second and third respectively.

Foster Malleck of St. Mary’s captured the gold in the midget division while teammate Ruairi Tiernan captured the silver. Père-René-de-Galinée grade nine Kyle Bociort would take the bronze as the only non-Eagle in the top five.

Eliza Smith would capture gold in the junior girls division for Resurrection as the Phoenix won the team title. Hope Harnack of St. Benedict’s would win the silver medal, while Kara Hughes would take the bronze representing Resurrection.

The midget girls division would be controlled by Rockway Mennonite Collegiate finishing three girls in the top four. Rockway’s Claudia Heeney would take the gold while teammate Tessa Hedrick finished with the bronze. Nikki Soares of St. Benedict’s won the silver.

The CWOSSA Championships will take place Thursday October 29th at Bechtel Park in Waterloo, followed by OFSAA Championships on Saturday November 7th in Duntroon Ontario.
