WATERLOO REGION (November 12, 2015) – On Thursday in front of a packed house of Cavalier fans, the Woodland senior boys volleyball team set out to complete the District 8 season undefeated.

Early in the first set down 4-1 with Woodland rolling, Rockway called a timeout to calm the troops. The tactic worked as Rockway’s big swinger Ben Langweider lead the charge to slow Woodland down.

Woodland’s attackers Erik Katerberg and Brendan VanderGeest would be too much for Rockway to handle as they closed out the first set 25-21.

The second set saw incredible court coverage by the Cavaliers, ensuring that no tip plays found the floor. This, combined with great passing, made an easy 25-13 second set win.

Rockway would show flashes of brilliance in the third set, but could not string together multiple points to hang with Woodland.

Woodland would close out the match 25-12 on their way to their third straight District 8 championship, and six in the last seven years.

The junior District 8 final also featured Rockway and Woodland as Rockway looked to defend their title from 2014-15.

Woodland came out swinging taking a 15-10 lead, before a Rockway timeout. After making some adjustments, Rockway would battle back and take the first set 25-23.

The opening point in the second set saw a massive block from Rockway’s Kean Snider, setting the tone for the remainder of the set. The Flames from Rockway would take the second 25-12.

Rockway’s setter James Carr-Pries had his game on point throughout the match which was supported by great passing from all of his teammates.

The Flames would eventually capture the third set 25-18 along with their second straight junior volleyball title.

The junior Rockway team will accompany the senior Woodland Cavaliers to the CWOSSA Championships taking place in Waterford November 19th. If the Woodland seniors are successful there, they will look to defend their OFSAA title in Toronto, November 26-28.
