Eagles close out perfect District 8 season with repeat championship

KITCHENER, Ont. (February 12, 2014) – The St. Mary’s Eagles are once again the toast of District 8 senior girls volleyball claiming the championship final 3-1 over Resurrection on Wednesday night.

The Eagles defended their D8 title winning the senior championship over Resurrection with set scores of 25-11, 17-25, 25-21 and 25-16.  This marks St. Mary’s third ever senior girls’ volleyball title with the first coming in District 8’s inaugural season in 1990-91.  Last year was the school’s second senior girls’ volleyball title.

St. Mary’s ends the District 8 season with a perfect 12-0 record losing just four sets along the way.  Three of those set losses came against Resurrection and overall the Eagles swept their opponents in nine of their 12 games.

The Eagles also hold a perfect 26 game winning streak in D8 play with their last loss coming back on February 21st, 2012 against Resurrection in the District 8 championship.

Next up for St. Mary’s they will meet Assumption College School at the CWOSSA AAAA qualifier on Wednesday. Game time is set for 5:30pm in Brantford, Ont.

In the junior final, the St. David Celtics broke an 18-year drought, winning the District 8 championship in straight sets over Resurrection. The Celtics powered their way to the championship with set scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-14.

The championship marked the first time since 1994-1995 that St. David’s has won the District 8 junior crown.  It also was the Celtic’s third having also won the junior crown in District 8’s inaugural season in 1990-91.

Both St. David’s and Resurrection will aim to advance to CWOSSA next week with qualifying games.

St. David’s will host Holy Trinity (from Simcoe, Ont.) on Tuesday at 3:00pm for the right to advance to AAA championship while Resurrection will travel to Brantford to meet Assumption College School in the AAAA qualifier.  That game kicks off at 4:00pm.
