FHKY: St. David’s advances to D8 final

KITCHENER, Ont. (October 21, 2014) – The St. David Celtics are headed to the District 8 field hockey championship after defeating the St. Mary’s Eagles 1-0 on a goal by Kristen Straus in extra penalty flicks last evening.

The Celtics will battle the Resurrection Phoenix on Friday night (Oct. 24; 5:30pm) at St. David CSS for the District 8 title. The Celtics also earned a berth into the Central Western Ontario Championship (CWOSSA) with their win as District 8 receives two bids into the championship.

On Friday, St. David’s will be looking for their third District 8 field hockey title since the league’s inception in 1990 and their first since 1992-93. They finished the season with a 3-5-1 record and earned the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.

Standing in their way is Resurrection who are aiming for their sixth straight championship and their ninth in 10 seasons. They finished District 8 play with a perfect 9-0 record scoring 47 times and allowing just a single goal. Resurrection is also one of the strongest field hockey programs in the province having appeared in the last four OFSAA finals winning three of them.

Friday will also see the District 8 junior boys soccer championship which goes at 3:30pm at St. David CSS as well.
