KITCHENER, Ont (November 8, 2013) – The Resurrection Phoenix claimed both ends of the District 8 Girls Basketball Championship on Friday taking home the junior and senior titles.
Led by Sarah Schulz, Resurrection beat rival St. Mary’s in the senior championship 36-25. Schulz poured in a game high 19 points helping the Phoenix to their second straight District 8 senior girls title. Teammate Ellen McGowan also broke double digits pouring in 10 points.
St. Mary’s Beth Zebib had seven points to lead the Eagles while teammate Angela Mercurio posted five points the loss.
In the junior championship, Resurrection claimed their third straight District 8 junior girls basketball championship besting St. Benedict’s 34-19.
The Phoenix were led by Krissa Vasquez who dropped 13 points in the win. Teammate Jama Bin-Edward scored nine for Resurrection.
Afifa Salad was the top scorer from St. Benedicts recording 12 in the loss.
The wins in both games marked Resurrection’s eighth junior title and fifth senior title since play started in 1990.
It’s just the fifth time in D8 history where a school has won both junior and senior girls titles in the same season. Resurrection has now done it twice (2013-14, 2012-13) while Monsignor Doyle CSS (1999-00), St. David CSS (2006-07) and St. Mary’s HS (2008-09) have accomplished the feat once.
