WATERLOO REGION (November 26, 2014) – St. Benedict standout Afifa Salaad was named the District 8 most valuable player as the league announced it’s senior and junior girls basketball all-star squads on Wednesday.
The announcement was in advance of the 2014 District 8 / District 10 (Guelph) Girls Basketball All-Star showcase which goes tonight at Resurrection CSS. The junior game goes at 6:00pm while the senior event follows at 8:00pm.
Sallad, a grade 11 point guard, was the league’s top player helping St. Benedict’s to a 11-1 record and their first District 8 title since the 2002-2003 season. Sallad’s was one of the Saints most productive offensive players all season with her highest point total coming back on October 20 when she scored 18 in a loss to Resurrection.
Joining Salaad on the senior all-star squad was teammate Kayla Leusink who earned her second consecutive nomination to the senior girls first team. Saints making the second team included Brighton Ching and Julia Mascarenhas.
Resurrection had three players named to the senior squad with Rachel Engle and Celia McGlynn earning first team honours while Kelsey Caza was named to the second team. For McGlynn this was her second straight appearance on the senior team.
Megan Goar and Bobbi Sue Henges represented the St. David Celtics with Goar earning first team honours while Henges was once again named to the second team. Henges was also a member of the second team squad last season.
Kristen Hofstee was Woodland Christian’s lone representative on the team, earning second team honours. Hofstee helped Woodland finish in the top tier of D8’s tiering system.
District 8 champion Resurrection dominated the junior team with five players being named to the team. Jama Bin Edward, Meghan Sharp and Krissa Vasquez earned first team honours while Maddy Antwi and Buse Bin Edward were honoured as second team players.
Runner up St. Benedict were represented by two players with Maya Danis being named to the first team junior squad while Nana-Afia Agyeipah earning second team honours. St. Mary’s also had two players named to the team with Summer Pah and Iman Ahmad representing the Eagles.
St. David’s Rachel Sothern was the lone St. David’s representative on the junior squad.
The entire District 8 all-star team will showcase their skills as the all-star game which goes tonight featuring the best players from Guelph (District 10). Resurrection will host the event kicking off at 6:00pm.
