D8 SOCCER: St. Mary’s take double gold in boys and girls soccer

WATERLOO REGION (May 23, 2019) – On Wednesday afternoon both the senior boys and senior girls soccer teams from St. Mary’s High School captured the District 8 soccer Championships at RIM Park in Waterloo.

The St. Mary’s boys team went toe-to-toe with last year’s champion St. David’s right to the last minute. With St. David’s ahead one goal late in the second half, Eagles’ Samuel Kanneh scored to tie the game 2-2 with seconds remaining in regular time.

St. David’s appeared to have scored on a free kick in the first overtime period, however with an inadvertent whistle from the official with an injured player having not fully left the field, the free kick had to be retaken.

With no goals in overtime, a shootout lasted into the ninth round as St. Mary’s outlasted the Celtics 7-6.

St Mary’s first goal was scored by Ryan Amorim, while St. David’s goals came from Quinton Jackson and Ruben Solano.

In the girls championship, St. Mary’s continued their dominant season recording their seventh game this year without allowing a goal.

Alexa Cimermancic scored three goals for the Eagles and teammate Gillian Rovers added a goal as they rolled to a 4-0 win over Resurrection.

St. Mary’s goalkeeper Georgia Triantafila recorded the shutout.
