D8 TENNIS: School’s split championships three ways

WATERLOO REGION (October 6, 2016) – On Wednesday the District 8 Tennis Championships were decided with St. Mary’s High School claiming their second straight overall tennis championship, without winning either the team boys or girls title.

The boys doubles team of Nicholas Antolcic and Matthew Forseca from St. Mary’s lead the Eagles to gold in the boys doubles over Resurrection’s Kenton Voisin and Matt Del Rosso.

St. David’s girls squad easily won the girls team title taking gold in both singles and doubles. Gabriella Hudec defeated St. Mary’s Angela Bebel in the final and both players will advance to CWOSSA as Hudec will qualify in the open category.

The Celtics doubles pairing of Jessie Bauer and Sarah Helsby took gold defeating Eagles’ Jessica De Sousa and Cristy Maliwat in the girls double final.

Kristian Kopic from Resurrection helped the Phoenix to the team boys championship by defeating St. Benedict’s Mark Cooper in their boys singles final match. Kopic will advance to CWOSSA as an open player while Cooper will advance in the high school division.

Resurrection also took the mixed doubles title with Ryan MacLean and Mia Tamindzija defeating St. Mary’s Eric Remillard and Deborah Edwards. Both pairings will advance to CWOSSA in the open and high school divisions respectfully.

Winners of each division will advance to CWOSSA Championships held Friday October 14th at Northfield Racquet Club in Waterloo.
