WATERLOO REGION (March 29, 2017) – After collecting multiple MVP awards throughout the year at top end high school basketball tournaments, Zubair Seyed was the undoubted selection for the D8 league award.

Seyed was an electrifying player to watch all season as he lead St. Benedict’s to an undefeated D8 season, a CWOSSA AAA title and put on a thrilling 52 point performance in the OFSAA AAA final which the Saints lost by a single point. Seyed was named the D8 league MVP for the first time in the 2014-15 season as a grade 11, and again last season as St. Benedict’s won their first title in 15 years.

Joining Seyed as first team selections are his OFSAA silver medalist teammates, Evan Rodenburg and Justin Malnerich. Both players announced on Tuesday that they have committed to attend and play for the University of Waterloo next season.

St. David’s first team all-star selection Mason Cummings lead the Celtics to a second place regular season finish in D8, and an eventual silver medal. Cummings also lead the Celtics to a silver medal at the AA CWOSSA Championships.

Grade 12 guard Muyang Iluya from Resurrection rounds out the first team all-star selections. Iluya’s teammate Ali Rashid was named as a second team all-star. Iluya and Rashid were a regular leading scorers for the Phoenix throughout the D8 season.

Rockway’s Avery Martin was given a second team nomination in an effort to lead the Flames to a first place finish in the D8 senior ‘B’ division, and he averaged 31 points in the A CWOSSA Championships, winning the gold medal.

Rounding out the second team selections are grade 12 guard Brent Lasovich from St. David’s, grade 11 guard Ethan Passley from St. Mary’s and grade 12 forward Devante Douse from St. Benedict’s.

As a significant note of success at the CWOSSA level, District 8 teams collected four of a possible six gold medals this year along with St. David’s senior AA silver medal.
