WATERLOO REGION (March 31, 2017) – Resurrection’s Megan Fergusson was named the most valuable player for the District 8 girls hockey league on Friday.
Fergusson lead the Phoenix to their second straight District 8 title as they squeezed by a tough St. David’s team in the final series. As a grade 12 student, Fergusson trades off between playing defence and forward for the Phoenix, and in the 2016-17 season she scored 16 goals in 11 games.
Last year’s MVP Morgan Heinbuch-Filipowitsch was again named as a first team all-star as she helped collect seven shutout wins for the Phoenix.
The regular season winner, St. David Celtics, are represented on the first team by grade 12 forward Kristen Staus and grade 10 defender Emma Mulhall. They lead the Celtics to the CWOSSA A/AA final where they would collect a silver medal in an overtime loss in the final.
Grade 12 defender Clara Lochner was named to the first team from Monsignor Doyle, while Ella Murphy from St. Mary’s was the lone grade 9 student to be named as a first team selection.
Jen Bean, a grade 11 forward, and Sammy Dietrich, a grade 11 defender, played key roles in capturing gold for the Phoenix and thus, named as second team all-stars.
Watch out for the Celtics in the coming years as St. David’s added two junior aged forwards, grade 10 Chloe Davidson and grade 9 Abby White to the second team.
Darcy Windlinger, a grade 12 forward from St Mary’s as well as Emma House, a grade 11 goalie from Monsignor Doyle, were also named as second team all-stars.
