WATERLOO REGION (March 25, 2015) – On Wednesday, District 8 released their individual awards for the Boys Basketball season, and St. Benedict’s standout point guard Zubair Seyed was named the league’s most valuable player.
Seyed was unable to lead his team past the reigning D8 champions St. Mary’s Eagles, but not without trying as he dropped a game high 20 points in the final. This grade 11 averaged 21 points per game in D8 play including a 30 point performance as he lead his Saints to a semi-final win over Resurrection.
It is no surprise that three of the remaining four first team all-star spots went to players in the St. Mary’s starting lineup. Point guard Jermaine Lyle, shooting guard Tesloth Simon and power forward Jamari Stephenson all had outstanding campaigns leading St. Mary’s to an undefeated D8 season, and their fifth consecutive D8 Championship.
Resurrection’s grade 11 shooting guard Korbil Gany rounds out the senior first team all-star selections, while his teammate Muyang Iluya earns a second team all-star nod.
Grade 12 students, Mason Cummings of St. David’s and Ryan Stafford of Monsignor Doyle are their school’s loan all-star selections each earning a second team nomination.
St. Mary’s Eagles power forward Nathan Riley was named to the second team, while his teammate Tyrick Thompson earned an honourable mention from the selection committee.
Grade 11 shooting guard Justin Malnerich was also named to the second team, and his Saints teammate Alex Douglas was recognized with an honourable mention.
The junior first team selections was led by the well rounded scoring point guard from St. David’s Brent Lasovich. Despite the loss to St. Mary’s in the final, Lasovic scored a season high 32 points.
The D8 Champion Eagles are represented on the first team by centre Jason Jaros and guard Tyreak Farquharson who lead St. Mary’s to their fifth consecutive D8 title.
Père-René-de-Galinée’s point guard Patrick Martini attracted attention throughout the season as he averaged 26.2 points per game, including back-to-back 36 and 38 point performances.
Resurrection’ shooting guard Jemu Iluya earned a first team all-star recognition as he regularly led the Phoenix in scoring.
The District 8 junior second team all-star selections include shooting guard Demar Holness (Resurrection), forward Matt Kipfer (Rockway), forward Kanayo Nnadi (St. Mary’s), centre Jake Polski (St. Benedict’s) and small forward Matt Radocchia (St. David’s).
The selection committee also recognized forward Bryan Avila (Monsignor Doyle) and guard Daniel Zeglen (St. Benedict’s) as honourable mentions.
The District 8 junior and senior boys all-star teams will play against the District 10 all-stars on Tuesday March 31st. These games will take place at the University of Guelph with the juniors tipping off at 6:00 PM and the seniors at 8:00 PM. Admission for the event will be $4.00 for students and $6.00 for adults.
