D8 SWIMMING: St. Mary’s wins District 8 combined team swimming championship

WATERLOO REGION (December 19, 2019) – On Wednesday at the Wilmot Recreation Centre Pool, the St. Mary’s swim team narrowly captured the combined team title, and girls title by a combined 20 points.

The Eagles edged past St. David’s by five points in the girls team division, finishing with 238 points while St. David’s finished with 233. St. Benedict’s came in third with 212 points.

In the combined team score, St. Mary’s finished 15 points ahead of Père-René-De-Galinée, scoring 437 and 422 points respectively. Resurrection finished in third with 345 points.

Père-René-De-Galinée did win the boys team title with 282 points. St. Mary’s finished in second with 199, while Resurrection finished with 170.

There were two perfect individual scores that came from the pool on Wednesday, both from the senior high school divisions.

St. David’s Delaney Davis finished with a perfect 30 points after winning the 50M butterfly, as well as both the 100M and 200M freestyle races, posting CWOSSA qualifying times in each event. Teammate Kate Hinsperger finished second in the senior girls division followed by Resurrection’s Emmaline Stark in third.

Mehdi Al-Aoussi also gained 30 team points for winning 50M butterfly, 50M freestyle and 200M freestyle. Al-Aoussi posted an OFSAA qualifying time in the 200M race, and CWOSSA qualifying times in the 50M races. Leo Moodley from Resurrection finished second in senior boys with 27 points, and Brandon Murillo-Reyes from St. Mary’s finished third.

In the open girls division, the gold was a tie between Brooke Cronin from Resurrection and Ava Caron from Père-René-De-Galinée. Cronin won the 200M individual medley and 100M butterfly, and Caron won the 100M breaststroke and 100M individual medley. St. David’s Emma Heinbuch finished third.

Père-René-De-Galinée swept the top three open boy medals with Luc Landry winning gold, Alexander MacGillivray winning silver and Erik Jensen taking the bronze. Landry won the 200M individual medley and finished second in two other races.

The junior girls gold medal went to St. David’s Alex Kirkup as she won the 50M backstroke. Marisa Fewster from St. Benedict’s finished with the silver medal and Paige Spehar from St. Mary’s took the bronze.

Jack Johnston from St. Mary’s won the junior boys division finishing first in the 100M individual medley and second in two other events. Teammate Markus Pusztahegyi won silver and Dominic Sabado from Resurrection took home the bronze.

All individual event winners along with all swimmers who posted CWOSSA qualification times will advance to the CWOSSA Championships being held February 19, 2020 at the Wilmot Recreation Centre.
