D8 FIELD HOCKEY: St. David captures championship in thrilling comeback

WATERLOO REGION (October 17, 2024) – On Wednesday at Fountain Street Fields in Cambridge, St. David repeated as District 8 champions with late-stage heroics to topple top seeded Resurrection. 

Midway through the second half, Resurrection took a strong 3-1 lead over the Celtics on goals from Olivia Bowie (2) and Blythe Devereaux. 

Minutes later, Grade Nine Eden Murphy potted a goal to bring the score within one. With time winding down in the game, another Grade Nine Celtic Taylor Miller scored to draw the game even, pushing the conclusion to overtime. 

A penalty shot was awarded to St. David late in the second overtime period, and Lily MacDonald found the back of the net to take the lead. The Celtic’s defence stood strong against three short corners at the end of overtime, hanging on for a 4-3 win and collecting their second championship in as many years. 

The Celtics will now advance to the CWOSSA Championship on October 23 & 24, 2024 in Cambridge where both finalists from CWOSSA will advance to the OFSAA Championship in St. Catherines November 7-9, 2024.
