WATERLOO REGION (December 12, 2024) – On Thursday, District 8 announced that the league’s top honour would go to Toby Snider from Rockway Mennonite Collegiate.

For the second straight year, snider led the Flames to a perfect eight-win, zero-loss season, and this year, claimed his first District 8 senior volleyball gold medal.

“Toby found a way to help us win many close matches and boosted our statistical outcomes across the board, including his uncanny coin toss win percentage,” said Andrew Snider, Rockway’s head boys’ volleyball coach. “Most importantly, he did all this while contributing to a healthy team dynamic, displaying positive competitiveness and sportsmanship. Next year he is moving on to the exciting roster at Brock University and we wish him all the best and look forward to following his journey there.”

Snider, along with fellow first team all-star selection, Grade 12 left side attacker Matteo Castano, helped Rockway capture their second gold medal on the season, winning the single-A CWOSSA title while only dropping one set in the event. The Flames swept their pool with four wins at the OFSAA Championships and finished their season with a tough quarter-final defeat.

Also representing Rockway as a District 8 second team all-star is Grade 11 right side attacker Sebastian Malleck.

St. Benedict earned the District 8 silver medal for the second straight year with skilled play from Grade 12 first team all-star selections Daniel De Sousa as libero and Max Gulyas at middle. Saints’ Owen Lopez was named to the second team as a Grade 12 middle.

Two Grade 12 players, middle Feranwa Ekpenyong and setter Lucas Jonker, from Woodland were named as first team all-star selections helping the Cavaliers to a CWOSSA semi-final appearance.

Sully Cofell, a Grade 12 setter from Monsignor Doyle, rounds out the senior first team all-star selections, while teammate, Grade 11 right side attacker Gavin Goodin was named to the second team.

Resurrection’s Grade 12 starting right side attacker David Mastrapa was named as a second team all-star selection. Grade 12 left side attackers, Cameron Almeida from St. David, and Finn Murphy from St. Mary’s were also second team selections.
